My approach to family photography

Family photography in Greater Boston has been dominated by two extremes — the formal posed studio shoot, and the saturated outdoor "look at the camera!" session. I do neither.

What I do is candid lifestyle family photography — documentary in approach, editorial in edit. I show up, observe, suggest a few moments, and let your family be your family. The kid who won't sit still becomes the photo. The dog photobombing is part of the frame. The mess in the kitchen is the texture.

Then comes the edit — neutral palette, soft tones, nothing hyper-saturated, nothing Instagram-filtered. Photos that look like they could live framed in your hallway.


When to schedule your family session

The right moment is whenever something is already happening — first birthday, return from family travel, season change, sibling about to outgrow the older one. Don't wait for kids to "be ready for photos." That moment doesn't come.

Busiest windows:


Spring (April–May) — cherry blossoms, soft greens, magnolia at the Arboretum

Fall (mid-September to late October) — Arnold Arboretum foliage, golden light

Holiday window (mid-November to early December) — for cards and December gifting


Book 3–5 weeks ahead, especially around fall and holiday.

FAQ

How long is a family photo session?

45 to 60 minutes. With kids under 5, that's the sweet spot — long enough to capture variety, short enough to wrap before the meltdown.

Will you make the kids pose?


No. I direct very lightly — "go give your dad a hug" or "race your sister to the tree." The photo is the moment in between.

Do you photograph dogs in family sessions?

Always. They photograph better than most adults.
